Tulane Pain Management Center

The Tulane Pain Management Center (TPMC) offers an interdisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of pain.  At TPMC we understand that treating pain involves healing both the mind and the body.  We support the use of sound medical and psychological treatment for pain management.

Treatment includes a thorough evaluation of patients’ physical health and pain symptoms.  Each patient is treated individually, using the latest equipment and procedures to diagnose the pain and determine the best course of treatment.  The center is directed by physicians in the Anesthesiology Department who are trained and Board-certified in Pain Management.  The center has a close working relationship with the departments of Psychiatry and Psychology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and the Cancer Center.

In addition to Pain Management physicians, the service team includes trained nurses and clinicians as well as clerical staff ready to help patients with questions about insurance coverage.  Treatment is available at the Tulane Pain Management Center for a variety of conditions. When each patient completes the clinical diagnostic assessment, the physicians and staff of TPMC review the results and design a personal plan that will address each patient’s specific situation and need.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a constant pain that can last from a very short time to many years. Chronic pain can cause sleep deprivation and depression if it persists for a long period of time. Pain can be caused by injury, specific types of disease or even weak bones and muscles.  An example is fibromyalgia, a common central nervous system disorder that can cause great pain throughout the body.  Chronic pain is most common in middle-aged to elderly adults.
